Italské město Florencie je zaplaveno vražedným morem. Někteří lidé se zavírají do svých domovů, neboť nemoc se šíří velmi rychle. Jiní měli opačný lék na to, jak se této nemoci vyhnout – užívali si zábavy, hodně pili a žertovali. Lidé po tisících umírali, a tak je na márách nosili hrobaři z drobného lidu a jen málokdy pro nebožtíky někdo truchlil. V té době se v kostele Santa Maria Novella sešlo sedm dam. Autor dle svých slov nechtěl uvádět jejich pravá jména, pojmenoval je tedy: Pampinea, Fiammeta, Filomena, Emilia, Lauretta, Neifilie a Elisa. V kostele se náhodou setkají se třemi mladíky (Pamfineem, Filostratem a Dioneem), které přemluví, aby s nimi odešli z města. Poté se odeberou do jakéhosi sídla. Domluví se, že každý den bude zvolen král či královna a každý den si všichni připraví příběh na dané téma pro ostatní. Každý den je tedy vyprávěno 10 příběhů. Po deset dní přebývají v sídle a jedenáctý se vrátí zpět do Florencie, kde mladíci zanechají dámy v Santa Maria Novelle, na místě, na kterém se s nimi poprvé setkali.
