Dorothy L.Sayersová patřila k prvním absolventkám university v Oxfordu, pracovala jedenáct let jako reklamní textařka a proslavila se detektivními příběhy s postavou exentrického detektiva-amatéra lorda Petra Wimseyho, jednoho z nejoblíbenějších smyšlených hrdinů detektivního žánru. Tentokrát nejde o typický detektivní příběh, ale spíše o společenský román s detektivní zápletkou, kde se kromě záhady zločinu řeší otázky vztahů mezi jednotlivými společenskými vrstvami, ale i problémy manželství a vůbec vztahů mezi muži a ženami v konservativní předválečné Anglii, pro než autorka hledá netradiční východiska.

Detektivní román, v němž vraždu nesnesitelného hašteřivého malíře vyšetřuje dobře známý výstředník lord Petr Wimsey. V Galloway, ráji malířů a rybářů, je v místním potoce nalezen mrtev krajinář Campbell, protivný a militantní chlapík, kterého nikdo příliš nelituje. Přítomný lord Wimsey na jeho smrti s potěšením shledá podezřelé okolnosti a vytuší možnou vraždu. Případ je velmi složitý, jeho lordstvo se svým pověstným důvtipem (a za pomoci policie) však postupně vyloučí falešné stopy a dospěje ke konečnému správnému řešení. Tato detektivka se podobá rozkošné staré dámě: ač upovídaná a léty již poněkud zvetšelá, svým vtipem a stopami bývalého šarmu stále předčí i leckterou mladší soupeřku.
