Kniha začíná rokem 1909, kdy se do tradičních poměrů mandžuského maloměsta narodila autorčina babička a končí rokem 1978, kdy se autorce podařilo odjet studovat do Anglie.

Kniha se zabývá ojedinělým osudem tří sester, které se zapsaly do historie Číny 20. století. Nejstarší Aj-ling (1888–1973) se provdala za Kchung Siang-siho (1880–1967), který byl ministrem průmyslu, krátce i předsedou vlády Čínské republiky a rovněž guvernérem Čínské centrály banky. Po komunistickém převratu v Číně se Aj-ling s manželem usadili ve Spojených státech. Prostřední Čching-ling (1893–1981) se v roce 1915 provdala za Sunjatsena (1866–1925), zakladatele Kuomintangu, propadla komunistické ideologii a za vlády Mao-ce tunga patřila k předním funkcionářům strany. Nejmladší sestra Mej-ling (1898–2003) se provdala za generála Čankajška (1887–1975), během druhé světové války pomáhala Spojencům v boji proti Japoncům a v čínské občanské válce stála spolu s manželem v čele protikomunistické opozice. Po vzniku Čínské lidové republiky se přestěhovala na Thaj-wan, kde se stala první dámou svobodné Číny. Po manželově smrti žila v New Yorku, kde nakonec zemřela v požehnaném věku 105 let. Kniha popisuje život sester od dospívání až do smrti, jejich vzájemné vztahy, neshody i dramatické osudy, které byly natolik spjaté s novodobou historií Číny, že vyprávění o jejich životě může sloužit zároveň i jako přehledný nástin čínských novodobých dějin.
