    David Hume byl skotský filozof, historik a ekonom, jehož empirický a skeptický přístup zásadně ovlivnil západní myšlení. Hume se ve svém díle snažil vytvořit „přírodní vědu o člověku“, která zkoumala psychologické základy lidské povahy. Dospěl k závěru, že lidské chování řídí spíše touha než rozum a že znalosti pocházejí pouze z přímé zkušenosti, nikoli z vrozených idejí. Jeho teorie svobodné vůle a názor, že etika je založena na citech, měly hluboký dopad na následnou morální filozofii.
