Román Sto roků samoty, který vyšel poprvé v roce 1967, je jedním z nejvýznamnějších děl latinskoamerické, ale i světové prózy. Je komponovaný z množství reálných i fantaskních epizod a vypráví půvabné i kruté příhody šesti generací rodiny Buendíů, žijících ve fiktivní tropické obci Macondo. Román se dá číst jako historicko-chronologická zpráva o vývoji jihoamerického kontinentu od doby osvobození a začátku občanských válek (1830 - 1902) až po nástup severoamerického imperialismu (1899 - 1930). Můžeme jej ale také číst jako symbolický popis samoty člověka, který ztratil svou přirozenost, svůj harmonický vztah ke světu, v němž původně měl všechen život na Zemi svou věčnou, kosmickou dimenzi, a který je nyní vydán napospas postupnému umírání všeho. Motiv samoty je v románu úzce spjat s motivem smrti - metafyzická samota (soledad) je chápána jako předstupeň jakési solidarity (solidaridad) se smrtí. Bipolárnost slov soledad a solidaridad má pro Márqueze ovšem i svůj původní, etický, a tím i politický význam. Individuální samotu, jíž trpí všichni obyvatelé Maconda, lze překonat pouze láskou a mezilidskou solidaritou, která jako jediná může zabránit jinak nevyhnutelné zkáze.... celý text
