Po narození syna rozhodl vypátrat co nejvíce o tom, jak to chodí v americkém masném průmyslu, aby se mohl zodpovědně rozhodnout, čím bude svoje dítě krmit. V této knize popisuje, co během svého čtyřletého výzkumu zjistil, viděl a zažil. Neagituje, pouze předkládá fakta, se kterými se každý musí vypořádat sám. Pečlivě shromažďované údaje prokládá různými úvahami, příběhy a reportážemi, autentickými výpověďmi velko- i malochovatelů a pracovníků na jatkách. Vážné téma dokázal zpracovat citlivě a s nadhledem, kterému nechybí ani jeho typický smysl pro humor. Jonathanu Safranu Foerovi se podařilo napsat odbornou esej, u které bude čtenář chvílemi trnout hrůzou a chvílemi se nahlas smát. Kniha však není levnou propagandou proti konzumaci masa, ale unikátní sondou do fungování naší společnosti.
