Děj detektivní novely Tvar vody je umístěn do fiktivního sicilského města Vigàta. Nemusíme se však bát, že se jedná o mafiánskou historku na způsob Chobotnice, kdy je kromě tématu vyčerpaná snad i jeho parodie. Na bývalém pastvišti za městem, kam se jezdí za prostitutkami nebo drogami, je nalezen v autě mrtvý muž, ve stavu, který neomylně ukazuje na předchozí využití prvně jmenovaného povyražení. Oním mrtvým je významný místní činitel inženýr Luparello, což dává případu mimořádně delikátní rozměr.
