Díky udání závistivého souseda je uvězněn, ale i v nejtemnější kobce může znenadání zablesknout světélko naděje… Jeden z nejznámějších Dumasových románů se dočkal několika filmových i televizních adaptací.

Milostný román z konce 18. století, ve kterém autor formou dopisů líčí život francouzské šlechtické společnosti. Na příběhu dvojice libertinských šlechticů, kteří pro vlastní pobavení manipulují s osudy bližních, vytvořil autor nejen obraz určité doby a společnosti, zabývající se intrikami, ale uvedl do literatury řadu znamenitě psychologicky propracovaných typů a zobrazil složitost vztahů mezi lidmi s časově neohraničenou platností.
