Ústřední postavou této knihy je vlastně Simba, lovec lvů, a ne doktor, který ho podle lví stopy našel a v poslední chvíli operoval břitvou. Tím získal věrného pomocníka pro stanici. Všude, kde se něco děje, najdeme tohoto veselého chlapíka, který umí v každé chvíli při každé příležitosti svým originálním způsobem vyprávět o pravém lékaří a pomocníku. Uvidí-li však učitelku Perisi, nápadně zmlkne. Na konci knihy ji pak najdeme konečně po jeho boku při africké svatbě, navzdoryvšem překážkám, které se jim stavěly do cesty. V knize se vypráví mnoho o operacích a lékařských zákrocích. Není to však řada krvavých nebo pouze zajímavých případů z lékařské praxe uprostřed Afriky s provizorními prostředky. Středem zájmu jsou samotní pacienti, jejich reakce na pomoc a zásahy, barvitý život na lékařské stanicia různé nečekané, často velmi zvláštní příhody.
