Tato knížka vypráví o půlroční cestě, kterou podnikl Gerald Durrell s manželkou v roce 1954 do jižní Ameriky. Chtěli získat sbírku zvláštních zvířat a ptáků žijících v těchto končinách a dopravit své exempláře živé do zoologických zahrad v Anglii. Výprava se jim bohužel nepodařila, protože všechny jejich plány se vzhledem k různým nepředvídaným okolnostem zhatily. Výprava měla mít dvě fáze. Nejdříve se mínili vypravit na nejjižnější výběžek kontinentu, do Ohňové země, a poté do Paraguaye.
