Příběh románu se odehrává za války, ve válečném a těsně poválečném Londýně. Spisovatel Maurice Bendrix připravuje nový román. Při sestavování materiálu a nutném pozorování určité společenské vrstvy se Bendrix seznámí se Sárou, manželkou ministerského úředníka Henryho. Vzniklý milenecký vztah mezi oběma protagonisty Sára po určité době náhle a nepochopitelně přeruší a Bendrixova vášnivá láska se promění v nenávist. Teprve po letech se Bendrix setká se Sářiným manželem a dozví se od něj pozadí Sářina činu: během jednoho z německých náletů na Londýn byl zasažen dům, v němž se milenci nacházeli, a Bendrix byl zavalen sutí. Sára v domnění, že Bendrix je mrtev, prosí Boha, aby jejímu milenci vrátil život; na oplátku přislíbí, že se své hříšné lásky vzdá. Ryzost Sářiny lásky je příčinou „konce dobrodružství“. V okamžiku, kdy se Bendrix dovídá pravdu, je ale už pozdě na nápravu: Sára umírá na zápal plic. Bendrix poznává Boha skrze vlastní porážku a končí v zoufalství.

Psychologický román o osamělých lidech marně hledajících lásku, přátelství a smysl života. Jeho děj je zasazen do prostředí univerzitního městečka Coventry a odehrává se od dubna do prosince 1986. Hlavním hrdinou je věčný student Robin Grant, který se neúspěšně snaží dokončit doktorandskou práci a touží se stát spisovatelem. Z této deprimující situace ho nevyvede ani návštěva bývalého spolužáka Teda, který si vzal Robinovu studentskou lásku. Bohužel ale oba poznávají, že kromě ní už nemají nic společného. Navíc se Robinovi kvůli zcela nevinné příhodě v parku značně zkomplikuje život a začne se tak ubírat až k tragickému konci. Dotek lásky je čtivý román s velice nevšední stavbou (tvoří ho čtyři kapitoly, z nichž každá je doplněna povídkou ústřední postavy) a jistě zaujme nemalý okruh čtenářů.
