Historie čtoucích žen se zrcadlí v malířství a fotografii. Motiv čtenářky okouzloval umělce všech období. Trvalo ovšem několik století, než bylo ženám dovoleno, aby četly, co chtějí. Nejprve směly vyšívat, modlit se, pečovat o děti a vařit. V okamžiku, kdy začaly čtení chápat jako možnost vyměnit těsný svět domova za nekonečný svět myšlenek, fantazie, ale také vědomostí, staly se nebezpečnými. Ženy, které četly, si mohly četbou osvojit vědomosti a zkušenosti, které původně nebyly určené jim. Tuto napínavou kapitolu dějin čtenářek sleduje Stefan Bollmann s citem a pohledem pro detail. Andrea Hanna Hünniger vertelt over de jaren negentig in Oost-Duitsland. Haar generatie kent de DDR alleen uit de verhalen over vroeger, haar deel van het land ervaart de Duitse eenwording als een kaalslag, een rooftocht, een uitholling. Bijna ongemerkt voor Hünniger, destijds vijf jaar, is in 1989 de Berlijnse Muur gevallen en de nieuwe werkelijkheid ingetreden. Maar wat heb je aan een grote supermarkt als je ouders toch geen snoep voor je kopen? Of aan een glimmende rode mountainbike als de straten vol gaten zitten? Hünnigers vader raakt overspannen, haar moeder laat zich noodgedwongen omscholen. Niemand wil praten over het recente verleden. 'De beelden van euforie zijn de beelden van anderen.' Naarmate Hünniger ouder wordt en almaar nieuwsgieriger naar de DDR, volharden haar ouders steeds meer in hun stilte.
