Takto by se v roce 1981 jmenovala a takto by vypadala druhá velká Carverova sbírka, kdyby ji redaktor Gordon Lish autorovi neseškrtal, nepřepsal a nepřejmenoval na „O čem mluvíme, když mluvíme o lásce“. Zachovala se korespondence obou pánu, ze které vyplývá, že se Carver velmi snažil své dílo uhájit, ale nebylo mu to nic platné: Lish mu z některých povídek vyhodil čtyři pětiny textu. Carver (1938–1988) ještě za svého života některé původní verze vydal, ale v úplnosti nyní „přepsané“ povídky vycházejí poprvé.

Raymond Carver (1938–1988) nikdy nenapsal román (byť na něj údajně jednou už vzal zálohu), což se „nepovedlo“ ani tak bytostným povídkářům jako Ernest Hemingway a Bernard Malamud. U Carvera to navíc ani nelze vysvětlit či omluvit tím, že zemřel na vrcholu tvůrčích sil. Daleko pravděpodobnější totiž je, že mu to nebylo dáno a že se prostě v povídkách dokonale našel, i když to u něj zpočátku byla hlavně nutnost. Carver si Gordona Lishe přesto i nadále vážil a nikdy neopomněl zmínit to, jak se pozitivně podepsal na jeho kariéře.
