Problematika „stalinismu“, sovětského totalitního systému a komunistického bezpráví nachází řadu zájemců nejen mezi laickou veřejností, ale především v řadách odborníků. Ti všichni na stránkách Velkého teroru nacházejí srozumitelně formulované odpovědi na otázky týkající se jedné z tragických kapitol minulého století. Největší klad knihy spočívá v komplexnosti, s níž Conquest pojal problematiku represí v Sovětském svazu třicátých let minulého století. Neomezil se pouze na známé oběti represivních kampaní, ale represe a státní teror vztáhl k fungování sovětského systému jako celku. Conquestovo pojmenování či přejmenování řady obecných pojmů a teorií bylo v šedesátých letech (v době 1. vydání knihy) zcela novátorské. Conquest byl prvním historikem, který uchopil represe daného období jako celek postihující a deformující všechny složky společnosti. Tento celek označil dnes běžně používaným termínem „velký teror“. Některými skupinami badatelů a veřejnosti byly jeho definice označovány za provokativní či doslova za skandální a ostře odmítány. Většina z jeho závěrů se však během let ujala v běžné praxi a dnes je přijímáme jako samozřejmé. Přeložil Milan Dvořák.

The Harvest of Sorrow is the first full history of one of the most horrendous human tragedies of the 20th century. Between 1929 and 1932 the Soviet Communist Party struck a double blow at the Russian peasantry: dekulakization, the dispossession and deportation of millions of peasant families, and collectivization, the abolition of private ownership of land and the concentration of the remaining peasants in party-controlled "collective" farms. This was followed in 1932-33 by a "terror-famine," inflicted by the State on the collectivized peasants of the Ukraine and certain other areas by setting impossibly high grain quotas, removing every other source of food, and preventing help from outside--even from other areas of the Soviet Union--from reaching the starving populace.
