Vytváří přitom intelektuální podloží, na němž jsou Conradovy prózy pevně usazeny, a bez její znalosti nemůže být obraz jeho literárního a myšlenkového odkazu nikdy úplný Conradovy eseje, jejichž výbor vychází v Edice Revolver Revue v překladu Petra Onufera česky poprvé, ovšem stojí za pozornost především samy o sobě. Autor se i v nich projevuje nejen jako vytříbený a strhující stylista a znalec literatury, jejíž otázky patří k jeho základním tématům, ale také jako jasnozřivý společenský komentátor i politický analytik – například jeho úvahy o povaze ruské autokracie a mocenských ambicích ruského impéria se řadí k tomu nejlepšímu, co bylo na dané téma napsáno.

Námořníci přežijí a Jim je potrestán. Více však trpí výčitkami svědomí a prostřednictvím pomoci malajským domorodcům se snaží očistit nejen jméno, ale hlavně vlastní duši. Román je hlubokou sondou do duše člověka, který zklamal sám sebe a jehož svědomí mu nedovolí odpustit si.

Románová prvotina anglického prozaika polského původu, v němž mnozí spatřovali autora dobrodružných příběhů z jižních moří nebo z exotických pralesů. Teprve soudobé hodnocení nově osvětluje jeho tvorbu. Hrdinou knihy je rozpolcený člověk, který je vmanévrován do úlohy, na kterou nestačí. Po rozhodnutí zradit kolegu se ocitá pod tlakem i v komunitě ruských uprchlíků v Ženevě, kam dorazil se zvláštním posláním. Dramatický popis Razumovova zločinu a trestu je považován za jedno z nejpůsobivějších děl autora, který kritizuje britskou blahosklonnost. Příběh, určený západnímu publiku, zkoumá podivné formy ruského revolucionářství, od Dostojevského a Tolstého po Bakunina a Černyševského, a zmiňuje i bolševického vůdce Lenina. Výsledkem je hluboký pohled do psychologie země, kterou mladý autor poznal na Sibiři, kde zemřeli jeho rodiče. Tragikomické vylíčení udavačovy bezvýchodnosti ukazuje, jak se postoje Západu a Ruska míjejí. Liberálně soucitný Západ Rusku nerozumí, a Rusko ani nechce, aby mu někdo rozuměl. Tato nevyzpytatelná velmoc se vyznačuje „četností mimořádného" a lavírováním mezi hulvátstvím a mysticismem. Autorovo mistrovské dílo tak stále promlouvá svou prorockou naléhavostí.

Námořník Marlow vypráví jednoho večera několika lidem o své cestě po řece Kongo a o jeho setkání s pološíleným angličanem Kurtzem, který žil dlouhou dobu mezi domorodci a stal se i jejich náčelníkem. Dokázal si je podmanit a ovládá jejich myšlenky. Temná strana barbarství je ekvivalentem k temné straně civilizace. Conrad varuje před nebezpečím manipulace s lidmi, která vede k odosobnění a ke zlu. Jedna z nejzásadnějších a často diskutovaných knih J. Conrada byla zfilmována s T. Rothem a J. Malkovichem v hlavních rolích a její námět posloužil i k filmu F.F. Coppoly Apokalypsa. Připojená rozsáhlejší povídka Na pokraji sil líčí tragický konec kdysi slavného námořního kapitána, který se na konci své životní dráhy zpronevěří svým zásadám jen proto, aby zajistil existenci své milované dceři.

Novela Josepha Conrada vypráví o jedné nebezpečné plavbě, během níž hlavní hrdina, mladý námořník, poznává skutečný život a musí se vyrovnat s mnoha nástrahami osudu. Hlavní postava, ne nepodobná samotnému Conradovi, musí převzít odpovědnost za své činy, které zasáhnou i ostatní lidi. Další z knih Josepha Conrada, která je něčím víc než jen dobrodružným příběhem jednoho námořníka.

Pan Verloc provozuje anarchistickou živnost v londýnské čtvrti nedobré pověsti, kde se úspěšně maskuje jako neúspěšný trafikant, drogista a vetešník.
