Schauplatz des Romans ist die fiktive Republik Costaguana. Sie steht für ein Klischee Südamerikas, in dessen Geschichte Bürgerkriege und Diktaturen ständig wechseln. In diesem politisch angelegten Roman entwirft Conrad einen sehr komplexen Ausblick auf die Historie dieser fiktiven Republik. Die Westprovinz Sulaco besitzt am Golfo Placido eine sehr profitable Silbermine. Diese wird zum Gegenstand materieller Interessen im In- und Ausland. Durch eine separatistische Revolution wird Sulaco von den anderen Landesteilen Costaguanas getrennt. Ziel der Revolution war es gleichfalls, einem Putsch durch eine von Populisten geführte Aufstandsbewegung zu entgehen. Die Bevölkerung der Republik ist in Schichten getrennt. Die Unterklasse wird von bäuerlichen Mestizen und Indios gebildet. Aus dieser Klasse werden sowohl die Minenarbeiter als auch die Soldaten für die jeweiligen Armeen durch Zwang rekrutiert. Zur Oberschicht gehören die aus Spanien kommenden, landaristokratischen Blancos. Sie sehen sich als die Alteingesessenen des Landes. Eine dritte Schicht bilden die Zuwanderer, die als Ausländer angesehen werden. Dazu zählen vor allem Briten und Italiener. Von ihnen ist der Ausbau des Hafens, der Eisenbahn und nicht zuletzt der Silbermine abhängig.

Anstoß zu dem Roman gab die dramatische Geschichte des Pilgerschiffs Jeddah, das 1880 in Seenot von seinem Kapitän verlassen wurde. Conrad befasste sich mit dieser Geschichte nach seiner Ankunft in Singapur 1883. Jim ist ein junger britischer Seemann, der als Erster Offizier auf der Patna dient, einem heruntergekommenen Schiff, beladen mit Pilgern, die vom indischen Subkontinent nach Mekka zur Pilgerreise Haddsch gebracht werden sollen. Bei einer Havarie verläßt die Besatzung aus Halunken das Schiff und überläßt die Pilger ihrem Schicksal. Sie befürchten, die Patna würde sinken. Jim will eigentlich an Bord bleiben, springt aber dann doch der restlichen Besatzung hinterher. Die Patna sinkt jedoch nicht, ein französisches Schiff nimmt sie ins Schlepptau und bringt sie in Sicherheit. Während sich der Kapitän und die anderen Besatzungsmitglieder einem Prozeß entziehen, stellt sich allein Jim der Verantwortung. Das Gericht entzieht ihm seine nautischen Patente aufgrund seiner Verfehlung. Im Gericht trifft er Marlow, der sich mit ihm anfreundet und versucht, ihm Arbeit als Gehilfe verschiedener Bekannter, z. B. eines Müllers oder eines Schiffsausrüsters, zu verschaffen. Jim versucht unerkannt zu bleiben, aber immer wenn seine Vergangenheit ans Licht kommt, gibt er seine Stelle auf und bewegt sich immer tiefer in den Fernen Osten. Seine Schande verfolgt ihn wie ein Schatten.

Er wird Augenzeuge einer extremen Grausamkeit gegenüber den Eingeborenen und zweifelt zunehmend an den Rechtfertigungen der Ausbeutung, aber seine Freunde zeigen sich nur wenig beeindruckt von Marlows Erschütterung. Conrads Erzählung ist ein Beitrag zur Diskussion über den englischen Kolonialismus und Rassismus am Ende der Herrschaft Queen Victorias. Die Erzählung gilt heute als eines der wichtigsten Prosawerke in englischer Sprache. Die Erzählung hatte eine enorme Wirkung auf andere Autoren wie T. S. Eliot, William Faulkner, F. Die Erzählung wurde 1993 unter dem Titel Heart of Darkness von Nicolas Roeg mit Tim Roth und John Malkovich in den Hauptrollen als Fernsehfilm verfilmt. Die bekannteste Umsetzung des Stoffes ist Apocalypse Now von Francis Ford Coppola aus dem Jahr 1979, der die Geschichte in den Vietnamkrieg transportierte und mit großem Staraufgebot (Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall und Dennis Hopper) als Antikriegsfilm in die Kinos brachte.

Der Roman ist in zwei Teile gegliedert, so wie es der Untertitel bereits ankündigt. Das Besondere ist dieraffinierte Erzählweise. Conrad entfaltet hier in höchster Perfektion seine schon aus »Lord Jim« bekannte Standpunkttechnik. Kapitän Marlow (bekannt aus »Herz der Finsternis« und »Lord Jim«) schildert aus der Perspektive einer zufälligen Ferienbekanntschaft das Schicksal von Flora de Barral. Dem Leser bleibt es überlassen, die Zusammenhänge zwischen den Ereignissen herzustellen. Als die Heldin Kapitän Roderick Anthony kennenlernt, keimt im Leser die Hoffnung auf, daß die beiden trotz aller Bedenken ihrer Umgebung miteinander glücklich werden können. Aus all den Ereignissen des ersten Teils entwickelt sich jedoch erst im zweiten Teil der innere Konflikt des Romans und das »Thema vom schrankenlosen Walten des Zufalls im Leben der Menschen«.

Conrad estreou-se através da revista literária The Savoy, revista de artes e literatura, que em 1896 logrou publicar um total de oito números. Com um cariz modernista ainda nos seus primeiros passos, e também decadentista ─ cujo movimento se aproximava do seu fim e que defendia a tese "A Arte pela Arte" ─ The Savoy marcou a sua era. Este conto viria a ser mais tarde publicado na coletânea de contos de Joseph Conrad, Tales of Unrest (1898). Conrad desconsiderava o conto "Os Idiotas" considerando que a história era uma obra derivada, e que por tal não teria grande valor, no entanto, na qualidade de tradutor e editor, escolhi-a para integrar esta coleção por ser a primeira publicação do autor, e pelo catastrofismo que temos lido em várias das histórias que têm sido publicadas na Série Grandes Autores da Contra Escrita, aqui no seu V volume. A good many years ago there were several ships loading at the Jetty, London Dock. I am speaking here of the 'eighties of the last century, of the time when London had plenty of fine ships in the docks, though not so many fine buildings in its streets. The ships at the Jetty were fine enough; they lay one behind the other; and the __Sapphire__, third from the end, was as good as the rest of them, and nothing more. Each ship at the Jetty had, of course, her chief officer on board. So had every other ship in dock. The policeman at the gates knew them all by sight, without being able to say at once, without thinking, to what ship any particular man belonged. As a matter of fact, the mates of the ships then lying in the London Dock were like the majority of officers in the Merchant Service-a steady, hard-working, staunch, un-romantic-looking set of men, belonging to various classes of society, but with the professional stamp obliterating the personal characteristics, which were not very marked anyhow.

The story deals with two European men, named Kayerts and Carlier, who are assigned to a trading post in a remote part of the African Jungle. There they take part in ivory trading, hoping to financially benefit the company as well as themselves. With no specific tasks or important things to be done, they both become increasingly isolated and demoralized as the time goes by. At one point in the story, the native Makola, serving as Kayerts's and Carlier's bookkeeper, initiates an exchange of slaves for ivory. Initially Kayerts and Carlier are stunned and scandalized by the idea, yet eventually they accept the deal and aid Makola for his huge profit. Both men are continuously plagued by diseases and grow very weak physically towards the end of the story. Finally, a seemingly trivial matter - sugar - sparks an irrational, uncontrolled and violent conflict between them, and ends tragically as Kayerts accidentally shoots and kills Carlier. At the end of the story, just when the company steamboat approaches the station two months later than it should have, Kayerts hangs himself out of desperation.

Il romanzo narra la storia di un giovane chiamato a comandare una nave perché il suo capitano è morto. Egli deve condurre la nave in un posto dell'Oceano Indiano ma la traversata nasconderà molte insidie e pericoli. Il viaggio diventa l'allegoria del percorso interiore del giovane capitano: tutte le sue insicurezze, i sensi di colpa e le paure vengono superate con il coraggio e la volontà di non arrendersi alla propria sorte e a quella degli altri.
