Set in the Croatian city of Zagreb, then a part of Yugoslavia, in the period between the world wars Ruta Tannenbaum’s central character is an ingenue inspired by the real-life figure Lea Deutsch, the now-forgotten Shirley Temple of Yugoslavia who was murdered in the Holocaust. Using their shared Jewish heritage as a starting point, Jergovic´ constructs a fictional family history populated by historical figures with the precocious Ruta at the center. Stephen Dickey’s translation masterfully captures Jergovic´’s colloquial yet deeply observed style, which animates the tangled and troubled history of persecution and war in Croatia.

Tragajući za rješenjima "kvadrature kruga" Bosne i Hercegovine, dvojica njezinih vodećih pisaca nude nov, ali ne manje prodoran i istančan uvid u uzroke tamošnje drame.Bosna i Hercegovina: Budućnost nezavršenog rata podijeljena je u tri dijela. Prvi je tekst "Sam u Bosni", u kojemu Miljenko Jergović djelo Ivana Lovrenovića smješta u kontekst kulture i politike proteklih dvadesetak godina u BiH. Slijedi dugi biografski intervju Jergovića s Lovrenovićem "Kao Bosanac, nisam manje Hrvat, zato što nisam samo Hrvat". Kroz otvoren i prijateljski razgovor o Lovrenovićevu životnom iskustvu, dva pisca dojmljivo i živo, s mnogo detalja, predočuju kako su drame proteklih desetljeća opterećivale ljudsku intimu u Bosni i Hercegovini, ali i u Hrvatskoj. W trakcie pracy nad wznowieniem, wydawca i tłumaczka pragnęli dodać nowe opowiadania. Choć autor początkowo odmówił, ostatecznie dostarczył trzy nowe teksty, a następnie całą nową książkę, co pozwala na równoczesne czytanie obu zbiorów.
