Kanadský básník a romanopisec je dnes světoznámým autorem díky oceněnému románu Anglický pacient, jehož filmová verze získala největší počet Oscarů v r. 1997. Autor byl do té doby známý spíše jako vynalézavý experimentátor, rozbíjející běžné románové postupy, spojující poezii aprózu, ale také normální děje se značně fantastickými, až surrealistickými jevy. Do této skupiny jeho děl patří i fiktivní memoár Máme to v rodině z roku 1982. V barvité a exotické mozaice poskládané z příběhů, anekdot, básní a faktografických pasáží Ondaatje oživuje svoji minulost a mapuje svůj rodokmen: pochází ze Srí Lanky, kde žil až do svých devatenácti let.

Autor Anglického pacienta přichází s vizionářským veršovaným románem o americkém násilí. William Bonney zabil prvního člověka ve svých 12 letech. V 21 letech měl za sebou dalších 19 vražd... Bravurní vypravěč M. Ondaatje, opíraje se o dobové prameny, fotografie, ale i vlastní představivost, popisuje cestu Billyho Kida Novým Mexikem kolem roku 1880.

Text předcházející Ondaatjeho knihu "Anglický pacient", za kterou obdržel prestižní Booker-Prize, je strhujícím popisem osudů Patricka Lewise, jenž ve 20. letech tohoto století přichází z kanadských lesů do Toronta, aby zde prožil svůj příběh prostoupený novou podobou civilizace a komunikace. Druhá svetová vojna a rozbombardované Toskánsko tvoria však pre autora len odrazový mostík, pretože Ondaatje hneď, ako nájde svoj špecifický rytmus rozpoznávania, vovedie čitateľa do strhujúcich príbehov štyroch postáv pochádzajúcich z úplne odlišných prostredí, ktoré sa náhodne stretnú tesne pred koncom vojny.
