Také Lou a Raymond ji požádají o pomoc, ale v tu chvíli ještě netuší, jaké zkoušce bude jejich mravnost a tolerantnost podrobena. Výborná povídka s motivem nadpřirozena.

Novela Nejlepší léta slečny Jean Brodieové je považována za autorčino nejvýznamnější dílo. Dějovou linku tvoří příběh skupiny studentek dívčí školy, které si jejich zvláště osobitá učitelka „vyvolí“ za své stoupenkyně a snaží se jim během období, jež považuje pro sebe i pro ně za přelomové, vtisknout postoje, jež považuje za určující pro důstojný život. Kniha ale především zachycuje zvláštní ambivalenci vztahu mezi dívkami na prahu dospělosti a jejich sebevědomou „vůdkyní“, jejíž ambivalentní a těžko posuzovatelná povaha se vynořuje ze souhry různých hledisek, očekávání a vzpomínek.

Večírek je oblíbenou příležitostí, při níž se scházejí příležitostní lidé. Na jednom večírku v Londýně se sejde pestrá společnost. Klábosí o všem možném a v té době záhadně zemře matka jednoho z hostů. Zůstává po ní značné dědictví. Policie nezjistí nic podezřelého, ale z vyprávění protagonistů nakonec vysvítá, že jedna osoba je nanejvýš podezřelá: s její minulostí jsou těsně spojována již tři záhadná úmrtí, třebaže ona sama byla vždy mimo podezření.

Je těsně po druhé světové válce a Londýn se nesměle probouzí z hubených válečných let. Obyvatelky londýnských „ženských domovů“, dobročinného penzionu The May of Teck Club, se nadechují svobody a lační po nových šatech, nových mužích, novém životě. Metropole ale zůstává poznamenána válečnými šrámy, zboží je na příděl a dívky zjišťují, že zlu se daří i v dobách míru. Novela navazuje tématem, stylem, biografickou inspirací i datem vzniku na Nejlepší léta slečny Jean Brodieové, knížku, kterou se Brodieová ve světě a s velkým časovým odstupem i u nás proslavila nejvíce. Podobně jako Nejlepší léta zachycují vratký přechod skupinky školaček od naivního dětství k dospívání, zachycují Dívky bez prostředků snahu skupinky mladých žen zajistit si samostatnou existenci a zorientovat se v novém světě – přičemž Sparková v obou dílech osvědčuje tutéž formulační úspornost, umění diskrétního náznaku a smysl pro vtip i pro tragiku prostou sentimentality či patosu.
