Legenda aurea je vrcholným dílem latinské legendy, vyprávěním o životě a zázracích svatých, které složil dominikánský mnich Jakub de Voragine koncem 13. století. Autor vytvořil příručku pro dominikánské kazatele, zahrnující 176 příběhů o svátcích Krista a svatých uctívaných v katolické Evropě, seřazených podle církevního roku. Legenda později zastínila ostatní sbírky legend a dodnes existuje ve více než tisíci latinských rukopisech. Jakub de Voragine měl schopnost poutavě vyprávět, čímž přibližoval pravdy víry jak duchovním, tak laikům. Již ve 13. století byla Legenda překládána do národních jazyků a její příběhy pronikly do lidových vyprávění a pohádek. V češtině byla poprvé zpracována v roce 1357 neznámým dominikánem na Pražském hradě, který byl ve styku s králem Karlem IV. a jeho kancléřem Janem ze Středy. První novočeský překlad, vydaný v roce 1984, zahrnoval různé typy Jakubových legend a později byl rozšířen, aby zpřístupnil přibližně třetinu textu. Obsahuje také ukázky z legend o českých světcích, jako jsou sv. Václav, sv. Vojtěch, sv. Prokop a sv. Ludmila. Přepracované 2. vydání.
