Durch die starke Ybakra-Strahlung treten irreparable Nervenschädigungen bei den in Kältetruhen schlafenden Teammitgliedern auf. Der Hilferuf des Vulkaniers Grake erreicht die Enterprise erst nach zehn Jahren. Auf dem Forschungsasteroiden im Black Box-Nebel muss Captain Kirk dann feststellen, dass sich das Bewusstsein der seit zehn Jahren dort arbeitenden Vulkanier dramatisch verändert hat.
