Tove Ditlevsenová vypráví svůj životní příběh — příběh ženy z obyčejného dělnického prostředí, odkud se snažila co nejdříve uniknout do světa literatury. Kniha vyobrazuje složitá ženská přátelství, manželství bez citu a porozumění, mateřství a nechtěná otěhotnění, milostná vzplanutí, rozpolcení mezi muži, závislost na alkoholu a drogách, ale především závislost na psaní. Autorka se již v sedmnácti letech stala slavnou básnířkou, ovšem věnovala se i psaní novel, románů, povídek, esejů a především memoárů. Svůj život ukončila roku 1976 sebevraždou. Ačkoli ji soudobá kritika kvůli jejímu dělnickému původu i prostému faktu, že je žena, nebrala vážně, Ditlevsenová se nakonec vypracovala v jeden z nejnaléhavějších hlasů dánské literatury dvacátého století a se stejnou intenzitou oslovuje čtenáře po celém světě i dnes.
