William Wordsworth (1770-1850) was an English Romantic poet famous for helping to usher in the Romantic Age in English literature with the publication of "Lyrical Ballads" (1798), which he co-wrote with Samuel Taylor Coleridge. All the poems of "Lyrical Ballads" are presented in this volume together with his 1807 work "Poems, in Two Volumes" and other assorted poems. Wordsworth's wonderful poesy is evocative of the sublime beauty of both nature and the everyday world, not to be missed by poetry lovers and fans of Romantic poetry in particular. The poems include: "To the Daisy", "Louisa", "Fidelity", "She was a Phantom of delight", "The Redbreast and the Butterfly", "The Sailor's Mother", "To the Small Celandine", "To the same Flower", "Character of the Happy Warrior", "The Horn of Egremont Castle", etc. Wordsworth was poet laureate of Britain between 1843 until his death in 1850. Other notable works by this author include: "The Tables Turned", "The Thorn", and "Lines Composed A Few Miles above Tintern Abbey".

William Wordsworth is usually remembered as the quintessential Victorian Poet Laureate: a dull, worthy, establishment figure, with impeccable middle class, Tory, Anglican credentials, whose moralistic poetry has been required reading for generations of yawning school children. Yet there is so much more to Wordsworth than Daffodils and The Prelude. This selection of letters and autobiographical fragments introduces us to the real Wordsworth: the rebellious schoolboy, who vandalised his family portraits, became a supporter of the French Revolution and fathered an illegitimate daughter in France; the radical poet whose flouting of the conventions of the day attracted the ridicule of the reviewers and forced him to endure thirty years of rejection, obscurity and financial hardship before achieving belated critical and popular success; the devoted brother, husband and father who could still write passionate love letters to his wife after ten years of marriage and the birth of five children; and, finally, the revered patriarch whose poetry formed the hearts and minds of a generation, whose opinions were sought by writers, politicians, churchmen and educationalists throughout the English speaking world, but who thought nothing of vaulting walls, skating on the Lakes or climbing Helvellyn even in his seventies.

Wordsworth's verse declares a belief in the power of poetry to teach by appealing to the imagination and to the 'grand elementary principle of pleasure, by which man knows, and feels, and lives, and moves'. His unique relationship with the poet and political activist Samuel Taylor Coleridge, formed in the political and social ferment of the 1790s, produced a revolution in literature, resulting in the joint volume, Lyrical Ballads (1798-1805) - a landmark in the history of English Romanticism. This selection, chosen from the Oxford Authors critical edition, includes all Wordsworth's finest lyrics, and a large sample of The Prelude (1805), his extraordinary autobiographical poem in blank verse and the first truly great achievement of a new era in English poetry

Of all the lasting innovations that William Wordsworth (1770-1850) brought to our literature, it is his discovery of nature and his fresh vision of human lives in the context of nature that have most influenced our cultural climate. Here, collected in this volume, are Wordsworth’s finest works, some of the most beautiful poems ever from the famous lyrical ballads, including “The Tables Turned” and “Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey,” to the sonnets and narrative poems, to excerpts from his magnum opus, The Preludes . By turning away from mythological subjects and artificial diction toward the life and language around him, Wordsworth acquired for poetry the strength and new sources of inspiration that have allowed it to survive and flourish in the modern world.

A continuous text made up of extracts from Dorothy Wordsworth's Journal and a selection of her brother's poems. Dorothy Wordsworth kept her Journal 'because I shall give William pleasure by it'. In doing so, she never dreamt that she was giving future readers not only the chance to enjoy her fresh and sensitive delight in the beauties that surrounded her at Grasmere but also a rare opportunity to observe 'the progress of a poet's mind'.Colette Clark's skilful and perceptive arrangement of Dorothy's entries alongside William's poems throws a unique light on his creative process, and shows how the interdependence of brother and sister was a vital part in the writing of many of his great poems. By reading these poems in relation to the Journal it is possible to trace the processes by which they were committed to paper and so achieve a fuller understanding of them.A writer in her own right, Dorothy kept her Journal sparse in personal and emotional detail. Yet there is, nevertheless, a deep emotional undercurrent running beneath the surface which only falters when William marries Mary Hutchinson. Never again was Dorothy to achieve the freedom, spontaneity and the limpidly beautiful prose with which she infused and irradiated the Grasmere Journals.

Wordsworth's visionary intensity and simplicity of style made him one of the most popular Romantic poets. Wordsworth's major theme was the influence of nature on man, and this was explored and expounded to great acclaim through the Lyrical Ballads . These remain a landmark in the history of English romanticism for their innovative, elementary style and their treatment of familiar objects and ordinary people. As a young man Wordsworth was inspired by revolutionary ideals and heartfelt passions which influenced his poetry. With great lucidity he wrote a range of celebrated sonnets, evocative odes, and majestic blank verse. He was a great innovator and his poetical works have permanently enlarged the range of English poetry, both in subject matter and in execution. This book contains every piece of verse known to have been published by the poet himself, including the 1850 text of The Prelude .
