Vor 50 Jahren erschien Erwin Schrödingers (1887-1961) kleines Buch Was ist Leben? in deutscher Sprache (ursprünglich 1944 in Englisch veröffentlicht). In diesem Klassiker näherte sich der österreichische Nobelpreisträger der zentralen Frage der Biologie aus dem Blickwinkel der Physik. Das eigentlich für Laien verfaßte Buch fand eine hohe Aufmerksamkeit innerhalb der Wissenschaft und lieferte letztlich einen entscheidenden Anstoß für die Entwicklung der Molekularbiologie (deren erster Meilenstein die Aufklärung der DNA-Struktur 1953 war). The year is 2050. Sea levels have been rising for nearly half a century. Parts of San Diego are underwater and Point Loma is an Island. For Adam McBride, ten years old, its always been like this.
