Více o knize

From 1807 to 1814, armies from Napoleon's empire clashed with the allied powers of Spain, Britain, and Portugal for control of the Iberian Peninsula. The Peninsular Wars, or Guerra de la Independencia, significantly contributed to Napoleon's downfall, yet until 1813, the conflict's impact on French affairs in central and eastern Europe was indirect. Author C.S. Forester narrates the story of a remarkable eighteen-pound cannon, used by local townspeople in their rebellion against the French. To prevent its capture, they hide it beneath stones, but years later, guerrilleros discover its location and seize it for their cause. This colossal gun, while highly valued, presents immense challenges regarding transportation and defense. Over time, it changes hands among various guerrilla leaders, each gaining strong leadership through their connection to the gun, only to be captured or killed in battle. Eventually, the gun comes under the control of 18-year-old Jorge, an untrained yet naturally gifted leader and tactician. The exploits of the Spanish irregulars under Jorge lead to the diversion of significant French troops from their fight against the Peninsular allies, ultimately contributing to the war's outcome.
