Na rozdíl od ostatních Remarquových knih je v této knize atmosféra, i přes nepříznivost doby, tak nějak odlehčena sarkastickým humorem hlavní postavy, střídající se s hlubokým filozofováním o smyslu života. V knize se, jak je u Remarqua zvykem, odráží nejen osudy postav, ale také společenská a politická situace v tamním Německu. Za mě vedle Jiskry života a Na západní frontě klid, jedna z nejlepších autorových knih.
