Hans Breuer, the last wandering shepherd of Austria, is an extraordinary character who sings Yiddish songs to his 625 sheep. Sam, a young Jewish journalist from New York, raised with his grandmother Bashy's warnings about pogroms, meets Hans by chance and decides to accompany him through the Austrian Alps. He wants to learn more about the life of the unusual shepherd, as well as explore his Jewish roots and anti-Semitism in Austria. Equipped with a tape recorder and new designer boots, Sam quickly realizes that his walks in Central Park have not prepared him for the challenges of the alpine world. Despite his neurotic fears, Sam learns a lot about Hans's origins, the country of Austria, and especially about himself during the hike. The travelogue is marked by great humor and deep seriousness. The author, in the tradition of young Jewish storytellers, moves through the Alps and Austrian history like a younger version of Woody Allen, surprising readers with his remarkable insights.
