Popravdě jsem nevěděla, jak začít. Po Makové válce jsem do této knihy vstupovala bez velkých očekávání, přestože jde o jiný žánr. Doporučili mi ji sami spisovatelé, abych lépe pochopila český literární rybník, a tak jsem autorce dala šanci. Na první pohled zaujme vizuál – žlutá obálka s očima, minimalistická a přitom uhrančivá. Body dávám i za to, jak autorka ukazuje spisovatelský svět: nikoli jako místo plné podpory, ale prostředí plné rivality a marketingu. Kuang nastavuje literárnímu provozu zrcadlo a nahlas pojmenovává to, co čtenáři tuší – že „bestcelery“ často stojí spíš na PR týmu než na kvalitě. Hezky vystihuje i realitu sociálních sítí a snadnost, s jakou se člověk může stát obětí kyberšikany. Jenže… pak se to celé utrhne ze řetězu. Sledujeme dvě autorky – jednu úspěšnou, druhou ne. Po smrti té první se June promění v bezskrupulózního parazita. Jakmile ochutná úspěch, nic ji nezastaví, ale příběh přestává dávat smysl. V jednadvacátém století by otázku autorství vyřešila lingvistická analýza během chvíle, ale děj to ignoruje. June je nesnesitelná a čtenář jen čeká, až pravda praskne. Konec navíc působí až směšně „jasně“, skoro jako pocta Padesáti odstínům. Shrnuto: Kuang sice odhaluje nešvary literárního světa (a sama do nich svým způsobem zapadá), ale ať píše kratší text, nebo rozsáhlou knihu, často ztrácí kontrolu nad tím, co chce vyprávět – a její tvorba tím trpí.
