Excelentný literárny debut, príbeh je napísaný veľmi pútavou formou, ktorá určite zaujme, mňa osobne fascinovalo aké krásne myšlienky sa v knihe nachádzali (či už o Bohu, nádeji, budúcnosti), zároveň však dokázal surovo opísať krvavú realitu ruskej občianskej vojny (bez nejakej romantizácie), v knihe nechýbajú ani psychologické opisy, prelínanie sna a reality, ktoré zosilňujú čitateľský zážitok. Samozrejme kniha má aj niekoľko nedostatkov, miestami sa text stával neprehľadným, dielo samo o sebe má miestami politický nádych, ako keby Bulgakov čiastočne nadržiaval boľševikom. Koniec koncov, je to jedinečné "svedectvo" priameho účastníka ruskej občianskej vojny (keďže slúžil ako lekár v bielej armáde) a vypovedá o ťažkom období dejín Ruska/Ukrajiny, kedy bežný ľudia nevedeli čo prinesie budúcnosť. Koniec knihy bol síce pekný ,ale ako keby sa núkalo pokračovanie, pretože je dosť otvorený, sám Bulgakov v čase vydania tvrdil, že zamýšľa trilógiu, k čomu nakoniec nedošlo. Každopádne knihy odporúčam každému koho zaujíma Ruská občianska vojna, osudy bežných ľúdí v ťažkých časoch kedy sa rozhodovalo medzi životom a smrťou, alebo chce len nazrieť do tvorby Michaila Bulgakova (je to určite dobrý začiatok pre zoznámenie sa s jeho dielom).

Petlyura's troops particularly target Russian officers who supported the corrupt regime. Central to the story is the Turbin family: Alexei, a doctor returning from WWI; his 17-year-old brother Nikolai, a military cadet; and their sister Elena, who inspires Alexei's officer friends. They are joined by their comic foil, Vasily Lisovich, affectionately called Vasilisa, an almost Dostoevskian character. The novel showcases Bulgakov's skills as both a dramatist and prose artist, with surreal elements foreshadowing his later work, Master and Margarita. It vividly depicts the chaos of civil war while exploring themes of family loyalty and friendship. Initially published as a magazine serial in 1925, the project was interrupted when the magazine folded. Despite its complexities, the story's stage adaptation ran in Soviet Russia from 1926 to 1941, while the book itself was not published until 1966.
