Společenské systémy jsou výrazně odlišné, a proto i izolované. Hlavní hrdina se snaží tento stav změnit. Obyvatel planety Anarres, fyzik jménem Shevek, nedokáže nikdy rezignovat na právo na osobitost a svobodu a proto se cítí nešťastný jako člen společnosti ideálně rovných. Jediným východiskem z této situace se mu zdá být emigrace na sousední, nepřátelskou planetu Urras.
