    Čerstvě dostudovaný chemik Primo Levi, kudrnatý mladíček s nesmělým pohledem, je v prosinci 1943 zatčen a krátce na to transportován do Osvětimi, kde ho vězní až do osvobození tábora dne 27. ledna 1945.     Tam, kde většina válečných příběhů končí, na samém prahu míru, začíná vyprávění Prima Leviho líčící klikatou a spletitou cestu autora a jeho tří kamarádů – Cesara, Daniela a Leonarda – z Osvětimi domů do Itálie. Autorovi se podařilo jedinečným způsobem zachytit atmosféru prvých poválečných měsíců, plných naděje a optimismu, kdy se lidé upřímně radovali ze znovunabyté svobody a netušili, že kratičké období svornosti tří velkých spojenců už se pomalu chýlí ke konci.
