Anatomie kritiky Northropa Frye je výsledkem dlouholetého studia literatury, literární vědy i teologie. Poprvé vyšla roku 1957 v Princetonu a dnes je považována za jednu ze základních literárněvědných prací druhé poloviny dvacátého století. Frye vychází z předpokladu, že literární věda má vlastní strukturu poznání, a snaží se o vymezení jejích principů a terminologie. Ve čtyřech esejích se zabývá historickou, etickou, archetypální a rétorickou kritikou a uvádí příklady z antické i moderní literatury. Jednotlivá umělecká díla chápe jako součásti kultury a civilizace a odmítá jejich hodnocení z ideologického hlediska. Anatomie kritiky vzbudila velkou pozornost svým obsahem i formou. Inspiraci z ní dodnes čerpají nejen literární vědci, ale i umělci.

Kniha známého amerického literárního vědce a kritika se zabývá otázkami literárního kánonu, jeho utváření a proměn. Literární teorii i historii přitom zasazuje do mnohem širšího kontextu západoevropských kulturních dějin, respektive napětí mezi tradicí a jejím neustálým porušováním. Ve třiadvaceti kapitolách se obšírně věnuje největším autorům a dílům evropské a americké literatury od počátku až do současnosti, přičemž do samotného centra literárního kánonu staví Williama Shakespeara jako autora nejuniverzálnějšího a v podstatě nepřekonaného. Bloom se v tomto svém dosud posledním díle věnuje koncepci „úzkosti z ovlivnění“, kterou rozpracoval ve svých předcházejících knihách, avšak zároveň zde vášnivě argumentuje proti trendům v současné literární teorii a kritice, které se pokoušejí západní kánon zrušit, ať už ve jménu multikulturalismu či feminismu, a literaturu redukovat na cirkulaci „sociálních energií“. Obšírněji se zabývá několika velkými postavami dějin západní literatury, které považuje z hlediska utváření kánonu za klíčové, přičemž do samého centra kánonu staví W. Shakespeara. Svým polemickým vyhrocením vyvolala kniha mnoho debat, zejména v anglosaském světě.

Harold Bloom (*1930) si sérií knih ze 70. let, z nichž nejvýznamnější je právě Úzkost z ovlivnění, vydobyl pozici nejvýraznějšího amerického kritika své generace, dosáhl nejvyšších akademických pozic a trvale se zapsal do obecného kulturního povědomí. Pojem vlivu či ovlivnění je inspirován především Nietzschem, Freudem, prorockými básněmi Williama Blakea a gnostickou teologií. V ostrém kontrastu k předtím dominantnímu přístupu angloamerické nové kritiky Bloom zdůrazňuje osobní zápas básníka o nalezení vlastního hlasu – a rozvíjí obraz boje na život a na smrt (neboť vyjádření a mlčení či originalita a nápodoba jsou pro básníka formou života a smrti) mezi „efébem“ a jeho mocnými předchůdci. Česky z Bloomova rozsáhlého a vlivného díla již vyšel Kánon západní literatury (1994, čes. 2000), souborný pohled na celou evropskou literární tradici. Úzkost z ovlivnění vychází i s rozsáhlou předmluvou (věnovanou Shakespearovi), kterou autor doplnil ke 2. vydání z roku 1997.

Erdman has used the modern aids such as infra-red photography, micro-photography and a powerful magnifying glass to help his own sharp and experienced eyes, but his real achievement has simply been to look at the physical realities of Blake's text more closely and intelligently than any previous editor."
