Pojem vlivu či ovlivnění je inspirován především Nietzschem, Freudem, prorockými básněmi Williama Blakea a gnostickou teologií. V ostrém kontrastu k předtím dominantnímu přístupu angloamerické nové kritiky Bloom zdůrazňuje osobní zápas básníka o nalezení vlastního hlasu – a rozvíjí obraz boje na život a na smrt (neboť vyjádření a mlčení či originalita a nápodoba jsou pro básníka formou života a smrti) mezi „efébem“ a jeho mocnými předchůdci.
