However, jealousy and envy complicate this rivalry, as Sebastian's attempts to assert himself through his camera lead to Adler's humiliation and suffering. Ultimately, this struggle devolves into a darker contest of manipulation and deceit. Ernst Sebastian must confront his youthful transgressions and acknowledge his guilt, realizing, "My task is to interrogate myself."
