As Minerva delves deeper into Tremblay's manuscript, she feels a sinister presence reminiscent of the malign force that haunted Tremblay and the missing girl. These unsettling occurrences echo Nana Alba's stories of her girlhood in early 1900s Mexico, where she had a chilling encounter with a witch. Minerva suspects that the same dark shadow that plagued her great-grandmother and Beatrice Tremblay now threatens her in 1990s Massachusetts.
