Forced to join a caravan of the mad to the Ila's city of Oburan, Marak unexpectedly finds his destiny and a chance for life amidst a suicidal mission. The Ila tasks him with uncovering the source of the afflictions that plague the mad. Despite the dangers of the desert and internal tensions, Marak reaches his goal, only to receive an even more daunting mission from strange beings resembling him but acting differently. To save his people from the Ila's enemies, he must unite warring tribes and villagers for an epic journey across the desert before impending doom strikes. This gripping tale of war, love, and survival showcases Cherryh's masterful storytelling.
