In the Tale of The Fall of Gondolin, two formidable powers clash: Morgoth, the embodiment of evil, and Ulmo, a major deity opposing him. The story revolves around Gondolin, a hidden city built by Noldorin Elves who fled from Valinor after rebelling against the gods. Turgon, the city's king, becomes Morgoth's primary target, who desperately seeks to uncover Gondolin's location. Meanwhile, the Valar, including Ulmo, engage in heated debates, largely refraining from intervention. Tuor, cousin of Túrin and a key figure in Ulmo's plans, embarks on a perilous journey to Gondolin. During a storm, Ulmo reveals himself to Tuor, guiding him to the city where he rises in stature and marries Idril, Turgon's daughter. Their son, Eärendel, is prophesied to play a significant role in the future. However, Morgoth learns of Gondolin's whereabouts through treachery, launching a catastrophic assault with Balrogs, dragons, and countless Orcs. The tale culminates in the escape of Tuor, Idril, and Eärendel, who look back at the destruction of their home as they flee into a new narrative. Christopher Tolkien presents this story in a historical sequence, aligning it with other significant tales of the Elder Days, which J.R.R. Tolkien considered among the three 'Great Tales' of his mythos.
