Vzdáváme hold A. C. Doyleovi vydáním čtyřdílné série jeho známých i poprvé přeložených próz. Po třech svazcích neholmesovských povídek (Tajemství a záhady a Dobrodružství na moři i na souši, Tajnosti z ordinací a laboratoří) nyní vychází čtvrtý, závěrečný díl. Ten věnujeme nejslavnějšímu detektivovi všech dob Sherlocku Holmesovi. Pes rodu Baskervilllů, bezkonkurenčně nejznámější dílo A. C. Doylea, vyšel na pokračování v časopise Strand v letech 1901–1902. Tou dobou už autor z duše nenáviděl svou literární postavu, jež zastínila vše, co jiného v životě vytvořil. Doyle to sice cítil jako křivdu, avšak jeho příběhy o Holmesovi, tyto pohádky pro dospělé, se těší značné oblibě i dnes. Nejenže v nich dobro vítězí nad zlem a pevná morálka nad zkažeností – jejich kouzlo spočívá i v romantickém koloritu místa a doby, v nichž se odehrávají. Slavný román o psu z dartmoorských blat vychází v novém překladu a s novým českým názvem. Nechme se znovu okouzlit fantazií a vypravěčským mistrovstvím sira Arthura Conana Doylea, jehož touha po poznání a po lepším světě oslovuje nové a nové generace čtenářů.

Na druhej strane obetoval týždne tej najintenzívnejšej práce záležitostiam obyčajných ľudí, ak sa ich prípady vyznačovali čímsi zvláštnym alebo dramatickým, čo prebúdzalo jeho predstavivosť a čo bolo výzvou pre jeho mimoriadne schopnosti. Jeho neustále sa šíriaca povesť prinášala so sebou aj čoraz rozsiahlejšiu prax a z detektíva sa stal veľmi zamestnaný človek. Doktor Watson vo svojich zápiskoch uchoval podrobnú dokumentáciu o prípadoch, ktoré spolu riešili, a ako sám otvorene priznáva, z toho obrovského množstva je preňho mimoriadne ťažké vybrať tie, ktoré si zaslúžia zverejnenie. Podkladom pre drobné príbehy v zbierke poviedok Návrat Sherlocka Holmesa sa nakoniec stali kauzy, ktoré vzbudili záujem ani nie tak brutalitou zločinu, tvoriaceho ich jadro, ale skôr dômyselnosťou a dramatickosťou ich riešenia.
Čtvrtý román Sira Arthura Conana Doyla je zajímavý už svou dvojdílnou výstavbou. Holmes v polovině příběhu není hrdinou v přímé akci, významnější role připadá spíše doktoru Watsonovi jako kronikáři, který věrně zaznamenává vyprávění o pohnutých osudech tajného Pinkertonova agenta, jenž se s nasazením všech sil potýká s nepřáteli v drsném prostředí hornického městečka, ovládaného zločinným spolčením. 24-017-86
Po letech strávených detektivní prací v pochmurném Londýně zatoužil Sherlock Holmes po klidu a rozhodl se aktivní činnost ukončit. Osud ale rozhodl jinak.
