Kniha je dnes již klasickým dílem. Je nepopiratelnou skutečností, že by každý praktický lékař měl mít dostatečné psychoterapeutické znalosti. Sám se přesvědčil o tom, že velkou část výzkumu na poli základního psychoterapeutického bádání může provádět pouze praktický lékař, protože ten zná dokonale své pacienty a jejich povahu. Většina tradičních učebnic se však nikdy dostatečně nevěnovala vztahu lékař–pacient. Tato příručka je výsledkem jednoho z mála systematických pokusů o výzkum na tomto poli. Kniha je jedinečná tím, že přináší zcela nový pohled na vztah mezi lékařem a pacientem, na tento velmi důležitý aspekt práce praktického lékaře.
