This book suggests that linguistic translation is one minute province of an immense process of creative activity that constitutes the world as an ongoing dynamism of unceasing transformation. Building upon the speculative quantum gravity theory, which provides a narrative of the push-pull dynamics of transformative translation from the very smallest scales of reality to the very greatest, this book argues that the so-called 'translative turn' of the 1990s was correct in positing translation as a paradigmatic concept of transformation. More radically, the book stages a provocative 'provincialization' of linguistic translation, so that literary translation in particular is shown to display a remarkable awareness of its own participation in a larger creative 'contact zone'. As a result, the German language, literary translations in and out of German, and the German-language classroom, can be understood respectively as 'quantum' contact zones. Russell West-Pavlov is Professor of Anglophone Literatures at the University of Tübingen and Research Associate at the University of Pretoria.

The history of human interaction around the globe with its extraordinary mobility, hostility, productivity and creativity has clearly been driven as much by the infringement of borders as by their maintenance. This collection of essays scrutinizes the functions of borders, demarcations and their transgression in literature and other cultural artefacts. This resolutely interdisciplinary volume straddles a number of literary domains and also celebrates intermedial and generic transgressions, with its own internal borders being inhabited by a photo essay and two cycles of poems by contemporary Australian poets. These disciplinary and artistic border-crossings index a fundamental mobility, whether geographical, cultural or intellectual, which provides the very grounds upon which the volume's critical undertaking reposes.

How can contemporary Australian literature and culture be 'imagined' from abroad? What particular refractions may emerge out of an expatriate reflection upon Antipodean literature and culture? This collection of essays summarizes fifteen years' work done from an explicitly European perspective. The unashamedly outside perspective these essays present envisages a largely 'imaginary Antipodes' whose character is regarded from four distinct angles: indigenous literary production, white settler identities, migrant destinies, and the global construction of Australian literature, thereby gesturing towards the transnational perspective that furnishes the framing rationale for the collection itself. The thirteen essays range over a broad selection of literary and filmic texts, from classics such as Patrick White and Crocodile Dundee, via Castro, Davison, Fremd, Gooneratne, Grenville, Hall, Hospital, Lawrence, McGahan, Malouf, Martin, Morgan, Scott, Teo, or Yasbincek, through to wider issues such as indigenous poetry, the post-Mabo 'history wars' of the 1990s, and the global translation of Australian literature.

This book examines contemporary French and German texts within the context of the post-imperial order that emerged after the Berlin Wall's fall in 1989. It highlights the new East-West frontiers that have surfaced following the breakup of the Soviet "empire," which have been superimposed onto the North-South frontiers shaping the postcolonial world after the decline of European empires in the mid-twentieth century. The end of the Cold War's divide led to a re-inscription of colonial and neo-colonial borders along Europe’s southern edges, displacing the old East-West border to the Russian, Balkan, and Near-Eastern regions. The book focuses on these new North-South and East-West borders, featuring analyses of works by authors such as Tahar Ben Jelloun, Marica Bodrožic, Maryse Condé, and others. These writers explore the dynamics of exclusion and limited permeability before and after 1989. The selected texts, many emerging from outside metropolitan culture or straddling its borders, align with the cultural interaction axes and post-colonial paradigms of critique. Ultimately, the book aims to map the cultural manifestations of the complex and rapidly evolving new world order we inhabit.

The frontier has been the central metaphorical figure governing discursive configurations in the last two decades in Australia. The cultural landscape since the Australian High Court's 'Mabo' decision of 1992 has been increasingly openly defined as a site of animosity and hostility. Frontiers, both real and imagined, past and present, continue to haunt the cultural landscape of Australia. This volume explores a range of paraliterary and literary discussion of recent years which can be interpreted as displacements into the cultural realm of erstwhile frontier conflicts along the borders of white colonial settlement. The collection gathers together a distinguished group of scholars and writers from Australia, Europe and Asia to investigate the dual manifestations of frontiers - both genuinely historiographical and more broadly metaphorical - in the cultural debates taking place in the Australian public sphere from the early 1990s onwards. Long since terminated as real armed conflicts, these past skirmishes none the less continue to resonate in the consciousness of white Australia, leaving their mark upon literary texts, films, artworks, and public discourse.

This volume of essays links the questions Who's Australia? and Whose Australia? in interrogating issues of politics, society and culture in contemporary Australia. The essays ask pressing questions about the connections between the construction of identities and the distribution of resources, whether political, social or cultural in one postcolonial settler nation at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The contributions cover areas of enquiry as diverse as international law, immigration, indigenous issues, globalisation, religion, gender politics, fiction, and black-white reconciliation. The essays arose out of an extended lecture series organized by the Australia Centre Berlin and the Free University of Berlin in 2003-2004 and offer a fascinating cross-section of current research undertaken by academics at major Australian and European universities.
