Exploratory data analysis (EDA) is about detecting and describing patterns, trends, and relations in data, motivated by certain purposes of investigation. As something relevant is detected in data, new questions arise, causing specific parts to be viewed in more detail. So EDA has a significant it involves hypothesis generation rather than mere hypothesis testing. The authors describe in detail and systemize approaches, techniques, and methods for exploring spatial and temporal data in particular. They start by developing a general view of data structures and characteristics and then build on top of this a general task typology, distinguishing between elementary and synoptic tasks. This typology is then applied to the description of existing approaches and technologies, resulting not just in recommendations for choosing methods but in a set of generic procedures for data exploration. Professionals practicing analysis will profit from tested solutions – illustrated in many examples – for reuse in the catalogue of techniques presented. Students and researchers will appreciate the detailed description and classification of exploration techniques, which are not limited to spatial data only. In addition, the general principles and approaches described will be useful for designers of new methods for EDA.

Many crucial planning decisions in society and business rely on a deep understanding of movement across various fields, including transportation, logistics, and life sciences. The advent of mobile phones and technologies like GPS and RFID has generated vast amounts of location and movement data. To harness this information effectively, new visualization methods and algorithmic data analysis techniques are essential. The authors explore modern visual analytics methods capable of addressing the challenges posed by movement data, emphasizing the availability of necessary technology and software. They begin by outlining the types of data that describe movement, from individual trajectories to those of multiple objects, and introduce a conceptual framework for understanding movement data. This foundation leads to practical discussions on transforming movement data for enhanced utility and the infrastructure required for effective visual analytics. The authors demonstrate that analyzing movement data can reveal insights into the behavior of moving entities and the events surrounding their movement. Throughout the text, sample applications from diverse domains are presented, complemented by graphical representations of interactive displays and analysis results. This comprehensive exploration of visual analytics will benefit researchers, software technologists, and practitioners alike, offering scientific precision, essential algorith
