Píše se rok 1992, dějištěm je hlavní město nejmenovaného baltského státu. Do budovy britské ambasády vchází ošuntěle oblečený muž středního věku s těžkým kufrem. Vasilij Mitrochin, nyní už bývalý archivář KGB, přináší plný kufr tajných dokumentů z archivu KGB, o který se po celá desetiletí staral – a který opisoval. Tento dlouho očekávaný druhý díl navazuje na knihu Neznámé špionážní operace KGB (Mitrochinův archiv I) a zpracovává tajné operace sovětské rozvědky po celém světě, především v období tzv. studené války (1948–89). Poprvé zveřejňuje archivní materiály, které nejen doplňují bílá místa na pomyslné mapě poválečné historie světa, ale především zřetelně dokazují neuvěřitelný imperiální rozměr sovětské snahy ovládnout tzv. třetí svět. Názorně ukazují, jak naivní byla západní akademická sociologie, která nikdy nepochopila, že sovětský stát je řízen a ovládán KGB, že je pouze jakousi její zvenčí viditelnou potěmkinovou fasádou...

Druhé vydání. Noční můra tajných ruských agentů se stává skutečností – Mitrochinův archiv se otevírá. Žádný z bývalých spolupracovníků či agentů sovětských výzvědných služeb si už nemůže být jist svým krytím, nikdo z nich nemůže spoléhat na to, že dřív nebo později nebude soudně stíhán. Českému čtenáři se tak do rukou dostává materiál osvětlující temná pozadí smutných událostí roku 1968 i s dávno tušeným potvrzením toho, že „v tom zase měli prsty Rusové“. Ze stránek této knihy se čtenář také dozví – mnohdy jistě k svému nemalému údivu –, kde všude a v čem všem „Rusové ještě prsty měli a mají“. Je zřejmé, že by se to nikdy nepodařilo, nebýt neuvěřitelné odvahy a odhodlanosti důstojníka KGB Vasilije Mitrochina, který po dvanáct let takřka denně vynášel opisy přísně tajných materiálů z archivu zahraniční rozvědky KGB. Dále k tomu bylo zapotřebí husarského kousku britské zpravodajské služby SIS, která v roce 1992 z Ruska tajně propašovala nejen Mitrochina, ale i jeho archiv, jenž zaplnil několik beden! Až do vydání této knihy o existenci archivu nikdo nevěděl. A konečně – tato kniha by nemohla vzniknout, kdyby se rozsáhlého materiálu neujal jeden z předních britských historiků a spisovatelů, Christopher Andrew.
