Achtzehn erhaltene Handschriften belegen die aktive Nutzung der Kompilation, die vielfach durch umfassende Erweiterungen ergänzt wurde. Der Textumfang variiert zwischen 56.000 und 100.000 Versen. Während der erste Teil, die 'Alte Ee', von der Schöpfung bis zur Geburt Christi, bereits seit 1998 erschlossen ist, wird hier erstmals die 'Neue Ee' abgedruckt, die die neutestamentliche Zeit sowie die Geschichte der Kaiser und Päpste bis zu Friedrich II. umfasst – insgesamt über 18.000 Verse. Als Leithandschriften dienen bis zur translatio imperii auf Karl den Großen zwei bedeutende Manuskripte. Die Konstitution des kritischen Textes wird durch einen Kontrollapparat überprüfbar gemacht. Die detaillierten Quellenangaben am rechten Rand des edierten Textes bieten einen Überblick über die Zusammensetzung der Kompilation. Zahlreiche Quellen, sowohl lateinische als auch deutsche, chronikalische und dichterische, wurden verarbeitet. Das Werk gewährt somit Einblicke in das historische und literarische Wissen, das den interessierten Laien am Ende des Mittelalters zugänglich gemacht wurde.
