In this publication, Bart van der Heide argues that techno music can not only function as an ecstatic and collective experience, but can also serve as a platform for socio-critical discourse. Which cultural phenomena and social changes can derive from the techno scene? How can identities be experienced and how do they intertwine? The authors of this anthology examine techno music and its scene on the basis of current social issues. In doing so, they elaborate tools and discourse strategies on how subcultural platforms can be used politically. The publication TECHNO is a call to action to question the status quo and strive for social change. BART VAN DER HEIDE (*1974) has been director of Museion Bolzano since June 2020. Previously, he was director of the Kunstverein Munich and chief curator and head of research at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.

This book is an overview of the exhibition program of Bart van der Heide from 2010 – 2015, which he realised as the director of Kunstverein München. Each exhibition is presented by a corresponding booklet, containing all texts and images. These accompanying publications were designed individually for each exhibition in cooperation with Studio Manuel Raeder. The different designs play with various fonts, formats, and graphic elements. Together with these publications, a variety of coloured images of exhibition views conveys the curatorial direction as well as the identity of the Kunstverein in those years. A reflection by Bart van der Heide and all booklet texts are included in both German and English.

Her most recent comic seemingly depicts Amelie von Wulffen’s own life. It stands in for a parody of the contemporary, female, mid-career artist. The different chapters of the comic show humorous as well as macabre glimpses of frustration, fear, insecurity, and jealousy, offering a psychological tour de force through the life of an artist working today. Seemingly banal worries such as no one turning up to her exhibition opening, the young generation not appreciating her work, having a poor internet presence, or being seated at the wrong table during dinner, are realities that seem to have an entirely different weight in the art world than anywhere else.

Diese Art der Selbstbeobachtung wird auch in den Comics der Künstlerin anschaulich, die ihre scheinbar wahren Erfahrungen als zeitgenössische, weibliche Künstlerin der mittleren Generation schildern. Die humorvollen und beunruhigenden Kapitel gewähren Einblicke in Gefühle wie Frustration, Angst, Unsicherheit und Eifersucht und bilden eine psychologische Tour de Force durch das Dasein des zeitgenössischen Künstlers. Banale Ängste – wie die Sorge, niemand komme zur Ausstellungseröffnung oder die junge Generation könne mit den Arbeiten nichts anfangen – stellen existenzielle Fragen dar, die in der Kunstwelt bedeutender sind als in anderen Bereichen. Durch die Thematisierung dieser Ängste deckt die Künstlerin die Neurosen einer ganzen Branche schonungslos auf. Ihre Existenz, die zwischen Tragik und Komik schwankt, repräsentiert das Leben anderer. Überraschenderweise werden die Gemälde zu Entwürfen, während der Comic und die bemalten Stühle die „vollendeten Werke“ darstellen. Wer auf einem der individuell gestalteten Stühle Platz nimmt, taucht in die Lebenslagen der Künstlerin ein und findet sich möglicherweise in einer Situation wieder, in der eigene Ängste offengelegt werden. Der Comic Strip ist eine neue Arbeit, die für eine Ausstellung im Kunstverein München im Januar 2014 gezeichnet wurde. Anlässlich der Ausstellungen wird eine zweisprachige gedruckte Fassung des Comics im Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König erhältlich sein.
