Karl Ludwig von Knebel (1744-1834) ist einer der bekanntesten Unbekannten der Weimarer Klassik. Sein Name taucht als Empfänger bedeutender Briefe in Fußnoten literaturwissenschaftlicher Untersuchungen auf, er steht in jeder Biographie über Goethe und Herder, in Büchern über den Musenhof, über Anna Amalia und Herzog Carl August. Knebel war ein kommunikativer Knotenpunkt des Projekts Weimar und hatte seine ›fünfzehn Minuten‹, als er in Frankfurt das Treffen Goethes mit dem zukünftigen Weimarer Regenten arrangierte. Als Schriftsteller war Knebel ambitioniert, aber wenig erfolgreich. Die meisten seiner Texte genügten den eigenen hohen Ansprüchen nicht und gelangten nie in den Druck. Ausnahmen bilden Übersetzungen aus dem Lateinischen, einige philosophische Aufsätze und eine Reihe von Epigrammen, Hymnen und Elegien. Wenn es einer besonderen Reizbarkeit bedarf, um lyrische Texte verfassen zu können, hatte Knebel beste Voraussetzungen. Er war ein notorisch Unzufriedener. Formal sind seine Gedichte Ausdruck klassisch-antiker Harmonie, in der Sache oft bittere – und manchmal böse – Beschwerden über den Zustand des Menschen und der Gesellschaft. Zu den wenigen, die gut wegkommen, gehören seine Schwester Henriette, Herzogin Anna Amalia, Herder und Goethe. Die vorliegende Sammlung aller im Druck erschienenen Gedichte präsentiert Knebel als Autor und kritischen Geist. Sie möchte ihn befreien aus dem Schatten Goethes, in den die Literaturgeschichte den Urfreund gestellt hat. Und sie lädt dazu ein, Knebels Lyrik als eigenständigen Beitrag zur Weimarer Klassik zu lesen.
