Vrcholné dílo španělského romanopisce, básníka a dramatika (1870-1936), především však velkého satirika, jenž s ničivým posměchem dokázal šlehat vše, co stálo v cestě budoucnosti Španělska. Ústřední postavou románu je generál Santos Banderas, typický představitel oněch diktátůrků,kteří se dostávají k moci za pomoci zahraničního kapitálu ve státech Latinské Ameriky. První část románu je soustředěna na titulní postavu, líčí závěrečnou etapu diktatury, s jednotlivými záběry a episodami diktátorovy "státnické" činnosti, tyranovy zábavy a pokusy čelit revolučnímu hnutí. V druhém dějovém pásmu jsou líčeny pikle zahraničních exponentů kapitálu, ctižádostivců a politických kořistníků, kteří mají zájem na zachování diktatury. V třetí části jsou v jednotlivých výjevech zobrazeny rozmanité cíle, formy a tendence revolučního hnutí.

Autumn and Winter Sonatas completes the cycle begun with Spring and Summer Sonatas when the Marquis of Bradomin was at the height of his powers. Pese a haber quedado inconcluso, El ruedo ibérico fue el proyecto más ambicioso de Valle-Inclán. Se trata de una obra de madurez en la que el autor, plenamente dueño de sus recursos, despliega con asombrosa maestría su arte literario. Valle la concibió como una sola y monumental novela por entregas, en la que, tomando por modelo a Tolstói, pero sin renunciar a la óptica deformante del esperpento, se propuso captar el modo en que la sociedad española, observada en todos sus niveles, vivió los acontecimientos que se sucedieron durante el complejo período de su historia comprendido entre el destronamiento de Isabel II y la muerte de Alfonso XII.
