Utečie zo skupiny potulných komediantov, kde má neľahký život, na "slobode" sa stretáva s rôznymi ľuďmi, naráža na zlomyseľných, skúpych i čistých a spravodlivých ľudí, akí sa nájdu všade, musí sa poriadne obracať, ale svojouhúževnatosťou a priamosťou dosiahne vždy čo chce. Trošku nezvyčajný príbeh tvrdej reality i poézie dánskeho vidieka určite očarí nielen mladých, ale i starších čitateľov. Jeho autorka dostala za svoju tvorbu pre deti v roku 1976 Cenu H. Ch. Andersena.

Silas lebt im Dorf seines Freundes Godik. Godik durfte seinen Traum verwirklichen und Holzschnitzer werden. Er verspürt deshalb keine Lust mehr auf wilde Abenteuer in der Fremde. Ganz anders Silas: Er unternimmt immer häufiger ausgedehnte Ausflüge auf seiner schwarzen Stute. Bei einem dieser Ausflüge sieht Silas eine Kutsche mit durchgehenden Pferden. Unter Einsatz seines Lebens kann er die Kutsche anhalten. Aus Dank lädt der reiche Kaufmann Sandal ihn ein, mit der Familie in der Stadt zu leben. Dort erwarten Silas allerhand gefährliche Abenteuer. Am Ende muß er sich zwischen einem Leben in der Stadt und seiner eigenen Freiheit entscheiden.
