Private military and security companies have become a distinct and increasingly relevant phenomenon in defense and security politics. They can be used in different settings and situations and constitute adequate tools for their various clients. Yet, there is an intense debate about them since they may and do generate specific problems, including severe violations of democratic norms and human rights codices. The present collection of contributions to this topic by distinct experts in the field is unique as it covers most, if not all aspects involved in the use of private military and security companies. This book approaches the field of Political Islam from a European security perspective. Featuring various case studies and country surveys written by respected experts in the field, it offers a comparative perspective and comprehensive overview of the ideology and prevalence of Political Islam and its actors in more than 20 European states. The respective contributions identify key actors of Political Islam and reveal the activities, means, and strategies they pursue and employ across the continent. They also discuss if and how Political Islam could undermine the western liberal democratic order and its associated values. By doing so, the volume offers approaches to analyzing Political Islam and thereby strengthening the resilience of liberal democratic societies, while also protecting Muslims from the radical ideology and agenda of Political Islam.

Abgedeckt werden alle wesentlichen Bereiche des Binnenmarktrechts: -Diskriminierungsverbote und Grundfreiheiten -Vergaberecht -Wettbewerbs- und Beihilferecht -Grundzüge grenzüberschreitender Rechtsverfolgung Sein besonderer methodischer Ansatz beruht auf der zentralen Stellung von Originalquellen, insbesondere aus der Rechtsprechung der Unionsgerichte. Nach einem im angloamerikanischen Rechtskreis bewährten Vorbild werden die Leser so anhand konkreter Fallbeispiele mit den Besonderheiten der stark vom Fallrecht geprägten Rechtsordnung der Union vertraut gemacht. Für die 3. Auflage wurden neben der formalen Umstellung auf die Vorgaben des Vertrags von Lissabon vor allem auch das neuere Richtlinienrecht und die jüngste Rechtsprechung eingearbeitet.

Europas, insbesondere Deutschlands Politik basierte bislang auf drei Gewissheiten: Dass die USA uns beschützen, die Weltwirtschaft offen und die EU stabil bleiben. Nichts davon ist mehr sicher. Mit der Präsidentschaft von Donald Trump ist die bisherige Nachkriegsordnung am Ende. Und der Westen steckt in einer paradoxen Lage. Die USA weisen – America First – Führungsleistungen von sich, wollen aber dennoch für die europäische Entwicklung bestimmend bleiben. Die EU sucht nach mehr Eigenständigkeit, bleibt jedoch in allen Fragen auf die USA angewiesen und ist sich zudem untereinander uneins. Eindrücklich macht Thomas Jäger klar: Die demokratischen Lebensweisen in Europa werden nur in einem Bündnis aus USA und EU fortbestehen können. Europa, vor allem aber Deutschland, wird seine Rolle in der Weltpolitik klären müssen, denn die zentralen Herausforderungen finden sich unmittelbar vor seiner Haustür: Die russische Politik der Destabilisierung, Chinas macht- und handelspolitischen Ansprüche, die Migration und die Konflikte im Nahen und Mittleren Osten.
