This volume intends to foster a re-interpretation of the Nasrid architecture of the Alhambra in Granada and its post-Islamic appropriation and global diffusion. Taking into account the current debates on otherness, cultural exchange and artistic transfer, hybridization, stylistic renewal and national identity building, this collection of essays explores the significance of the Alhambra from the Nasrid period to the present time. Built as a military fortress and gradually enlarged to a multi-functional palace city, by the 19th century the Alhambra became a symbol of exoticism and reverie. As one of the most important legacies of the Islamic heritage of al-Andalus, its role as a mediator between East and West is more important than ever.

This publication accompanies the eponymous exhibition at the Vitromusée Romont, for which Philip Baldwin (b. 1947) and Monica Guggisberg (b. 1955) explore the theme of the labyrinth and present several works of glass art from their recent exhibitions in France, England, and Denmark, as well as new works created especially for the Vitromusée Romont. Their preoccupation with ancient history, the migratory nature of humanity, and the interconnected relationships of objects with form, function, aesthetic beauty, and symbolic meaning combine in ways that illustrate the artists' unique perspectives across civilizations going back thousands of years. With contributions from internationally renowned specialists, the catalog reflects the reinterpretation of a classical theme in contemporary glass art. Leur intérêt pour l’histoire antique, les pérégrinations de l’humanité et les relations réciproques entre forme, fonction, beauté esthétique et signification symbolique des objets expriment le point de vue unique des artistes. Le livre contient des contributions d’experts de renommée internationale et un essai rédigé par les artistes eux-mêmes qui reflètent les tendances artistiques actuelles et entraînent le lecteur dans un voyage liminal à travers les chemins labyrinthiques de l’art du verre contemporain.

With contributions from outstanding specialists in glass art and East Asian art history, this edited volume opens a cross-cultural dialogue on the hitherto little-studied medium of Chinese reverse glass painting. The first major survey of this form of East Asian art, the volume traces its long history, its local and global diffusion, and its artistic and technical characteristics. Manufactured for export to Europe and for local consumption within China, the fragile artworks studied in this volume constitute a paramount part of Chinese visual culture and attest to the intensive cultural and artistic exchange between China and the West.

Der vorliegende Band untersucht die faszinierende und wenig bekannte orientalisierende Architektur der Schweiz. In fünf thematischen Sektionen werden unveröffentlichte Materialien präsentiert und die Rezeption islamischer Kunst und Architektur in verschiedenen Regionen des Landes anhand ausgewählter Fallstudien aus dem 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert diskutiert. Im Fokus stehen Fragen zur Entstehung und Funktion orientalisierender Interieurs, der Beziehung zwischen Architektur und religiöser Identität, der lokalen und globalen Rezeption des neo-maurischen Stils sowie der Bedeutung des Orients für nationale Ausstellungen und die dekorativen Künste. Die fünfzehn Beiträge des zweisprachigen Sammelbandes (deutsch/französisch) verdeutlichen die Relevanz dieses künstlerischen Phänomens für die Schweiz und den größeren europäischen Kontext. Ziel ist es, zur Revalorisierung dieses wichtigen Denkmalbestandes beizutragen.

From an intercultural perspective, this book focuses on aesthetic strategies and forms of representation in premodern Christian and Islamic sepulchral art. Seeing the tomb as an interface for eschatological, political, and artistic debate, the contributions analyze the diversity of memorial space configurations. The subjects range from the complex interaction between architecture and tomb topography through to questions relating to the funereal expression of power and identity, and to practices of ritual realization in the context of individual and collective memory.

Das Maurische Revival des 19. Jahrhunderts zeigt die Faszination westlicher Architekten für das islamische Erbe von al-Andalus, besonders in den Arbeiten von Carl von Diebitsch (1819–1869). Er studierte 1846-1847 die nasridischen Bauten Granadas, die Alhambra, den Alcázar von Sevilla und die Moschee-Kathedrale von Córdoba und hielt deren ornamentalen Reichtum in Skizzen und Aquarellen fest. Vom 27. Oktober 2017 bis 10. Januar 2018 werden seine Architekturstudien und Bauentwürfe im Architekturmuseum der Technischen Universität Berlin in der Ausstellung «A Fashionable Style. Carl von Diebitsch und das Maurische Revival» erstmals in Deutschland präsentiert. Die begleitende Publikation bietet einen vertiefenden Blick auf die Exponate und thematischen Schwerpunkte. Der Fokus liegt auf Diebitschs Jahren an der Berliner Bauakademie, seinen Studien zur islamischen Architektur und seinen neo-maurischen Bauten in Deutschland und Kairo. Weitere Themen sind der Löwenhof als Nukleus des Alhambra-Stils, Owen Jones’ Alhambra Court von 1854, die serielle Reproduktion nasridischer Architektur in Gipsabgüssen und Möbeln sowie die Rolle von Stuck und Eisen in Diebitschs Werk. Er revitalisierte die nasridische Baukunst und deren Herstellungsverfahren und trug sie von Berlin aus in die Welt.

Die Moschee-Kathedrale von Córdoba zählt zu den Hauptwerken spanisch-islamischer Architektur und markiert als erster Monumentalbau von al-Andalus den Beginn einer der fruchtbarsten Phasen westislamischer Architektur. Welches sind die bautechnologischen Merkmale des Baus und wie ist er innerhalb der islamischen Architektur zu verorten? Welche Veränderungen durchlief die umaiyadische Hauptmoschee von Córdoba nach ihrer Weihung zur Kathedrale im Jahre 1236 und inwiefern beeinflusste diese neue Nutzungsphase die Denkmalpflegestrategien des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts? Eine kritische Untersuchung der Bau- und Restaurierungspraxis in der einst wichtigsten Moschee des islamischen Westens bietet neue Erkenntnisse zur Architektur von al-Andalus und dem nicht immer einfachen Umgang Spaniens mit seinem islamischen Erbe.

This volume commemorates the 160th anniversary of the Selamlik of Oberhofen Castle near Thun – one of the most significant Swiss Orientalist interiors, designed by the Bernese architect Theodor Zeerleder (1820–1868) – by presenting the latest research on the spectacular smoking room inspired by the luxurious reception halls in Cairo, which Zeerleder discovered during his travels to the East.
