Der Mediziner Johann Christian Rosenmüller (1771-1820) wurde im Jahre 1812 der erste Lehrstuhlinhaber für Anatomie und Chirurgie an der Universität Leipzig. Studiert hatte er in Erlangen, wo er seine Leidenschaft für Höhlenforschungen und paläontologischen Untersuchungen entdeckte. In seinem Werk „Die Merkwürdigkeiten der Gegend um Muggendorf“ beschrieb Rosenmüller seine Höhlenwanderungen. Nach ihm benannt ist die „Rosenmüllerhöhle“ – eine der populärsten Höhlen in der Fränkischen Schweiz. 1794 wechselte Rosenmüller nach Leipzig und promovierte über einen Bärenschädel aus der Zoolithenhöhle bei Burggaillenreuth. Das „Handbuch der Anatomie des menschlichen Körpers zum Gebrauch der Vorlesungen“ gilt als sein Hauptwerk.
